Face Covering City Ordinance Update

The City of Sanford has been declared to have Community Spread of COVID-19 by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), has an infection rate 4 times higher than the State average, and recently our School Status was reduced from a favorable Green to a higher caution Yellow. In recognition of these statistics, the City Council enacted an Emergency Ordinance – An Act to Alleviate Community Spread of COVID-19 on September 10, 2020.

Individuals and Businesses were already required to utilize Face Coverings as strengthened within the City’s Ordinance now with the following changes;

  • 1. Face Coverings were updated to include disposable and not just cloth and they must be properly worn over the nose and mouth.

  • 2. Retail stores over and under 50,000 sq. ft. must also make customers aware of and not allow entry if not wearing a Face Covering. Prior State exemptions remain.

  • 3. There is now a Local Penalty of a Warning and then a $100.00 civil fine for subsequent offenses by an Individual or Business. This is in lieu of the State granted authority to issue a citation of a Class E Crime and up to a $10,000 fine for noncompliance.
